Explorations
A Contemporary Ink Exhibition by Yoko Choi

“In creating this body of work, I began to dream of a world of beauty and happiness, simplicity and calmness, and the pleasures of joy.”  – Yoko Choi

The exhibition, Explorations, showcases Yoko Choi’s recent artworks that reflect a period of awakening and growth in her life.

This contemporary ink exhibition explores the notion of order and change, which constantly shapes and modifies our world. Born in Hong Kong, Yoko has always had a keen awareness of the relationship between nature and the man-made world. With an approach that is visual yet intuitive, the artist maps the process of change by layering thousands of repetitive strokes using permanent ink marker on Chinese rice paper, allowing her hands and eyes to surrender to the subconscious, while remaining fully mindful in the process.

The resulting artworks feature impressive compositions evoking urbanscapes, mountains, oceans and imaginative spaces – revealing that between the known and the unknown, the conscious and subconscious, lie unlimited possibilities.

Series II: Third Spaces
Universal orders are disturbed by constant changes. Sometimes, the process of change creates a third space – an undefined space – with unlimited possibilities. These spaces flow, transform or change again, until they become redundant, wasted or abundant. This series of work explores these “third spaces”, both imaginative and realistic.

Series III: Contemplations
Working continuously from the first stroke to the last, the artist completed each piece without rest to keep the conscious mind from interfering – allowing her hands and eyes to surrender to the subconscious, yet being fully aware and mindful in the process.
