Ms Bibi Chew is locally and internationally renowned for her art practice in multiple disciplines. Her artworks have been presented in numerous group exhibitions across Asia, Europe and North America.
Ms Chew’s first solo exhibition, titled “What if …” was launched in May 2017 at Shalini Ganendra Fine Art in Malaysia. Her accolades include winning the Della Butcher for Excellence in Painting award, organised by the Rotary Club of Orchard Singapore in 1994; and the First Prize Award (Senior Category) at the 4th Students’ Painting Competition, organised by the Ministry of Information and the Arts, Singapore in 1993. She was a Major Award recipient of the Young Contemporaries Award organised by the National Art Gallery Malaysia in 2000, and was also one of the major Malaysian artists selected to showcase her body of works at the first Kuala Lumpur Biennale organised by the National Art Gallery Malaysia in 2018.
Ms Chew’s works are collected by major public and private institutions, including the National Art Gallery Malaysia, Petronas Gallery Malaysia, Bank Negara Malaysia, Australia High Commission Malaysia, Singapore Ministry of Information and the Arts, as well as private collectors. She was also the selected Malaysian artist to participate in the 3rd Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale, “Parallel Realities: Asian Art Now” in 2005 at the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum in Japan.
Ms Bibi Chew completed her art education at the LASALLE College of the Arts, Singapore, where she graduated with a Diploma in Fine-Arts (Painting) in 1994. She subsequently obtained a Bachelor of Fine Art with distinction in 1995 and a Master of Fine Art in 1997 from the RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia. She currently serves as the Head of Illustration with the Malaysian Institute of Art.
