Artist: Hong Sek Chern, (b.1967, Singapore)
Title: Aspects Of The City II
Medium: Ink on Paper
Size (cm): 180.0 x 180.0 cm
Ms Hong splices fragments of the city to form a unique composite, extracting from the space beneath highways, public housing estates, playgrounds and walkways. Internal frames and interstitial spaces are mapped out from multiple viewpoints to form a matrix of the city. Everywhere we see glimpses of piping ducts, iron grids, concrete structures and beams. Melding principles and philosophies from Western art and Chinese ink traditions, Ms Hong reinvigorates the shanshui (mountain/water landscape) genre.
Ms Hong is a graduate of the National University of Singapore and the Nanyang School of Fine Arts, Singapore, and has a Master of Arts from Goldsmiths College, University of London, in the United Kingdom. She has won numerous awards including the Young Artist Award in 2000 and the President's Young Talent Award in 2001, and has represented Singapore on the international stage at events such as the 2002 Sao Paolo Biennale. A former lecturer at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Ms Hong is currently a full-time professional artist.
