Title: Ingrain 2.0
Medium: Ink on rice paper
Size (cm): 40 x 125
Ingrain 2.0 is a painting inspired by the famous Chinese painter and calligrapher, Mi Fu, from the Song dynasty.
Using the technique of ‘rice dotting’ strokes common in Chinese landscape painting to create texture similar to rice grains, the artist attempts to work towards a new, modern expression within the conventions of a traditional Chinese painting. Ingrain 2.0 echoes Western painting theories of abstraction and reduction as well as Taoist concepts of repetition and emptiness, exploring the idea of ‘being’ and ‘non-being’. The result is the artist’s navigation and reconciliation of white space and nothingness, creating an ambiguous optical illusion for the viewer.
