A highly expressive abstract painting, Packed emerged from Mr Lee's interest in the urban packing box that is designed to compress and store possessions. The painting conveys the sensation of contents bulging from an imagined box, refusing to be orderly and contained. Mr Lee uses bitumen, a tar-like substance, as his paint and applies this in idiosyncratic and vigorous strokes. He allows the bitumen to splatter, stain and be scratched out. The effect is a work marked by raw, liberated energy that resists containment.
