Roots was described as a "symphony" by the 1996 judging panel as they could almost hear the thunderous sound of the trees and roots intersperse harmoniously with the bells in the distance of the piece. An unusual composition, Roots depicts an old banyan tree with its aerial roots reaching downward. The monumental scale of the tree is heightened by Mr Chen's delicate detailing of the tiny human figures and pavilions, creating a seamless unity between man and nature.
