Medium: Acrylic on Linen
Size (cm): 179.0 x 108.0 cm
In his distinctive realist style, Mr Chng asserts a social commentary on modern day families and their reliance on foreign maids. To symbolise how the maid is unknown to us, Mr Chng has painted her from the back. Yet we entrust her to the important task of parenting. In this painting, the maid protectively embraces the children and appears to usurp the biological mother's role by going beyond care-giving and offering the children genuine affection.
The work is delicately executed on a floral wallpaper background which the subjects blend into, suggesting that the three are somehow neglected.
