Cairns, also known as Stone Stacks or Rock Stacks are mounds of stones balanced on top of one another in seemingly physically impossible positions, with gravity playing a key role in the success of the structure. The act of stacking stones is a practice of great patience and huge physical effort as it can take hours or even days to find just the right weight distribution and balance to keep the rocks from tumbling. Each rock may also be a significant representation: thankfulness perhaps, or something within that needs to be purged, or a gesture offered to someone in need.
Stone Stack: Year 8: Struggle, 2019 represents one year of the artist’s life, during which she was searching and struggling. It is one of a series of 10 artworks which span 10 years of her life. The painting acts as a vehicle for her own soul-searching, burying unwanted emotions and remnants of pain, and her pilgrimage back to her inner gravity that will ground her once more.
