Artist: Gong Yao Min, (b.1964, China)
Title: The Impression Of Singapore Series – Three, Colour Space
Medium: Chinese Ink and Colour on Paper
Size (cm): 182.5 x 182.0 cm
Mr Gong's impression of Singapore is that of a dense and compact city with pockets of sparkling light and space. His work synthesises the aesthetics of Western stained glass panels with their distinctive coloured illumination, and the versatility and fluidity of Chinese ink brushwork. The artist creates visual rhythms through alternating solid ink strokes with delicate patterning. Looking through his glass windows one can gaze at the city's old colonial architecture. The painting is a re-energising take on the shanshui(mountain/water) tradition in Chinese ink painting.
