They is a social commentary on the alienated contemporary family and a visual study of body language executed in Mr Fan's signature realist style. A young child looks intently at a loving elderly couple, who are tenderly sharing an umbrella and walking into the distance. The child is sandwiched between a couple, likely her parents, who manifest psychological and emotional distance between themselves and their child. The unsmiling working mother carrying a briefcase is matched by an equally inhospitable scowling man whose folded arms indicate a defensive, aloof disposition.
