Our identity is often defined by social constructs and norms such as race, gender and ideology, as well as personal preferences in music, movies and fashion. However, these differences often trigger disputes in our relationship with other people.
In Universe Under Our Skin, the artist features a little girl’s dress as the main object in her artwork to represent the first symbol of her identity in her younger years. The pattern of the dress is composed of enlarged human cells found under our skin, which the artist reverses to reveal the hidden beauty from underneath, using it to symbolically replace our outer skin. Through her artwork, the artist wants to convey the message that behind our social identity, we are all made of the same ‘material’ and that all human beings can live in harmony regardless of our status.
